The Junkers 88 crew were never buried and post-war controversy inflamed and polarised local opinion when the idea of a memorial to the four Germans was proposed. Ultimately, the village of King’s Somborne rejected the idea of any commemoration. Instead, others who felt strongly about the matter had this simple monument erected some long distance away and just across the border into the next parish. The memorial bears an incorrect date (23 instead of 21 August) and is hidden away in a very remote location.

By analysis of the losses suffered by the Luftwaffe that day it can certainly be concluded that the King’s Somborne aircraft was that flown by Freude and his crew, and in 1989 the author established contact with Anni Weiss, the former fiancée of Franz Becker. Anni was able to tell how she and the Becker family were greatly relieved to know what had happened to him, writing:
